Originally from Denmark, Copenhagen, Gus Hansen -The Great Dane(that’s what they call him) was born February 13, 1974.
He was originally a professional backgammon player but has moved to poker and quickly become a celebrity. He decided to focus on poker full time and in 1997 chose to become a professional poker player.
The Great Dane started playing poker at the Ocean View Card Room in Santa Cruz, California while he was an exchange student at UC Santa Cruz in 1993.
He moved to New York City in 2000 with the intention of playing backgammon professionally but found the field too small to build a lifetime vocation around. So this self-named Professional Gambler moved on to other sports, like poker.
After two years in the States Gus was forced to go back to Denmark to enrol in the army and in 1996 went back to the States and tryed his luck in the WSOP.
One of Hansen’s keys to success is his ability to play after the flop. He is able to put his opponents on hands and can smell weakness in most of his opponents.
The Great Dane, is known for his aggressive play in tournaments. This strategy of playing lower ranked hands and with a great talent at the poker table has proven to be a great success.
Gus is known around the world for his intellect, his remarkable abilities in the games of backgammon and poker, and his unique personality.
From 2002 to 2004, there wasn’t a more dominant player in the poker world than Hansen. He made his first Million dollar payday in 2005 when he won the Poker SuperStars Invitation
Gus has had years of success in the World Poker Tour, winning 4 WPT Events, making additional final tables, and cashing many more times. He is part of a very exclusive club of only 3 players to be elected to the WPT Walk of Fame.
