The Legend of Poker Doyle F. Brunson known as "The Godfather of Poker" , "Texas Dolly" or "Poker's Living Legend" was born August 10, 1933 in Longworth, Texas.
Doyle Brunson is a genuine poker legend. Now 76 years of age, Doyle has been playing poker professionally for more than 50 years.
He revolutionized the game of poker in the late 1970s when he released the book Super System the Bible of poker. His book included general poker strategies and other important tactics of the game never before written about.
Doyle was one of the best basketball players in America in his time and probably would have played professionally if he didn’t incur a career ending injury. Doyle continued his education and obtained his Bachelor and Masters Degree before moving onto working in a salesman position. After a brief stint working as a salesman Doyle decided to leave his job and start playing poker professionally.
He started to play poker in illegal games in Fort Worth and then eventually started to travel to various towns and met other well know players. After he became well know on the poker circuit, Doyle won the World Series of Poker Main Event in 1976 and 1977, becoming one of only four other players to win the event in back to back years.
For Brunson, poker is a game of people and the strategies you use against them – understanding what the guy across from you is going to do; why he's doing it and when he's going to make his move. "When you're able to put your opponent on exactly the hand he's playing, you can select the best strategy possible for that particular poker situation. A man's true feelings come out in a poker game."
Doyle has two poker hands named after him. The first is 10-2 offsuit, which he won both of his WSOP Main Event championships with when he made full houses. However, Doyle doesn’t like to be known for such an inferior hand. Doyle also has A-Q named after him, as he has said that he never plays that hand because it is so easily busted.
Brunson, a member of the Poker Hall of Fame, will be remembered forever for his aggressive play, signature cowboy hat, revolutionary book, and above all, lifting the game to new and incredible heights.
Texas Dolly is a poker legend in many fields. He is in the lead together with Johnny Chan in having most World Series Of Poker bracelets. They have 10 each. He was also the first to win a $1,000,000 poker tournament.
Even in his old age, Doyle Brunson hasn’t slowed down much. He routinely plays in the world’s largest cash poker game – the $4000/$8000 mixed game at the Bellagio.
He is a legend of poker, and has made poker what it is today.
